Sesuai judulnya, buku ini berisi kumpulan waka (salah satu bentuk puisi) dari Ogura Hyakunin Isshu yang diterjemahkan dan diberikan penjelasan tentang latar belakang penulis dan masa penulisan puisi tersebut. Hyakunin Isshu sendiri memiliki arti "seratus pujangga, masing-masing satu puisi", sementara Ogura adalah nama distrik tempat tinggal Fujiwara no Teika saat menyusun antologi ini.

Ogura Hyakunin Isshu saat ini cukup dikenal bukan hanya dalam bentuknya sebagai antologi puisi, tapi juga karena digunakan dalam bentuk karuta atau permainan kartu tradisional Jepang yang bahkan memiliki kompetisi tahunan untuk mencari pemain pria dan wanita terbaik.

"Tatsuya dyes her waters in.
The hue of autumn red."

The Magnificent Cherry Blossom - Lady Ise no Tayu

The eight-fold Cherry trees,
Of Nara-the ancient throne,
Have bloomed and shed their fragrance,
On our nine-fold palace halls.

A Failed Excuse - Sei Shonagon

The rooster crowed
In the midnight and had
Deceived the hearers well.
But here at the Gate of Osaka
The guards can always tell.

There is No Escape - Fujiwara no Toshinari

Is there truly nowhere
Where I may escape to?
Even in these mountain depths
I hear the deer's cry.
