But the S.T.A.R.S. may never get the chance, as the aggressive DNA-altering virus Umbrella has engineered to create its living weapons begins to infect them.

Review

"Resident Evil: Caliban Cove" bercerita tentang Rebecca Chambers, satu-satunya anggota S.T.A.R.S (Special Tactics and Rescue Squad) Beta yang berhasil selamat dari peristiwa Spencer Mansion (Resident Evil The Umbrella Conspiracy), yang memutuskan untuk kembali mengejar Umbrella Corp.. Kali ini, bersama anggota S.T.A.R.S baru yang belum terbeli oleh Umbrella, Rebecca menyelidiki sebuah labolatorium di daerah bertebing karang di Caliban Cove, Maine.

"RE Caliban Cove" adalah novel original dari novelisasi Resident Evil. Sayangnya, novel ini tidak sebagus empat novel adaptasi yang sudah kubaca.

Ceritanya terasa membosankan. Tidak banyak aksi yang terjadi. Tidak banyak juga puzzle yang dipecahkan. Chemistry antar tokohnya juga nyaris tidak ada. Coba bandingkan dengan chemistry Rebecca dan Billy di RE Zero Hour (review di sini).

Selain itu, saya rasa ketegangannya juga tidak begitu dapat karena Rebecca selalu bergerak dalam kelompok, beda dengan di novel RE lainnya. Walau tokohnya selalu berpasangan di novel-novel lainnya, tapi kedua tokoh utamanya selalu terpisah dan menghabiskan banyak waktu dengan berjuang seorang diri.

Eksperimen maju yang ditampilkan sebagai ancaman di sini juga kurang digunakan dengan baik. Rasanya sia-sia sudah ditampilkan suatu kondisi yang begitu menarik, tapi tidak terasa memberikan ketegangan lebih dalam cerita.

Secara keseluruhan, saya rasa novel ini kalah jauh kalau dibandingkan dengan novel adaptasi Resident Evil yang ada. Ceritanya tidak begitu seru dan karakter-karakternya kurang kuat.

"Resident Evil Zero Hour" adalah prekuel dari seluruh kisah Resident Evil. "Zero Hour" bercerita tentang Rebecca Chambers, anggota S.T.A.R.S (Special Tactics and Rescue Service). Setelah helikopter yang timnya tumpangi terpaksa mendarat darurat di hutan, Rebecca menemukan sebuah kereta api yang berhenti secara misterius dan memutuskan untuk menginvestigasinya. Di sana, dia menemukan zombie, mutan lintah yang dapat membentuk manusia, serta Billy Coen, seorang narapidana hukuman mati yang melarikan diri.

Rebecca dan Billy mungkin merupakan pasangan dengan chemistry terkuat di RE. Saya pengin lihat mereka jadian sebenarnya, tapi tidak mungkin juga kali, yah. Sejauh ini, rasanya baru mereka pasangan yang menunjukkan romance chemistry sekuat ini.

Ceritanya seru dan memberikan latar belakang apa yang sebenarnya menyebabkan penyebaran virus di Spencer Mansion, latar tempat di "Resident Evil The Umbrella Conspiracy". Bukunya cocok dibaca bahkan oleh orang yang tidak kenal dengan Residnt Evil.

"Resident Evil Nemesis" adalah adaptasi dari game Resident Evil Nemesis. "RE Nemesis" bercerita tentang Jill Valentine, anggota S.T.A.R.S. yang kembali menginvestigasi Umbrella Corp. dan virus yang sedang menyebar.

Dalam investigasinya, Jill terjebak di Racoon City, kota yang menjadi markas Umbrella. Menghadapi kepungan zombie, serta diburu oleh Nemesis, mutan yang dibuat khusus untuk mengejar para anggota S.T.A.R.S., Jill harus bekerja sama dengan Carlos Oliviera, anggota militer bayaran Umbrella, untuk lolos dari kota itu.

Ini buku ketiga dari adaptasi Resident Evil yang kubaca. Sebelumnya sudah baca yang Umbrella Conspiracy (review) dan City of the Dead (review).

"Nemesis" ini masih sama dengan kedua buku lainnya. Dia tetap setia dengan alur yang ada di gamenya. Yang menarik, kalau di game Jill yang menjadi karakter utama, di sini cerita justru lebih fokus dari sisi Carlos. Hal ini membuat ada banyak penjelasan tentang kejadian di balik layar yang tidak bisa diceritakan di gamenya. Sisi negatifnya adalah: Jill jadi terasa seperti tokoh sampingan di sini, sementara Carlos yang jadi tokoh utamanya.

Penulisnya juga berusaha memberikan logika pada semua sistem kunci di game, sesuatu yang sering jadi bahan lelucon karena dianggap tidak praktis di dunia nyata.

Jill had finally concluded that Umbrella's real board of directors, the ones no one knew about, were paranoid fanatics. They were self-involved children, laying secret agentgames and betting with other people's lives, because they could. Because no one had ever explained to them that hiding toys and making treasure maps was something people outgrew.

Because no one has stopped them. Yet.

Secara keseluruhan, saya suka dengan adaptasinya. Ceritanya seru, walau ada beberapa bagian yang terasa banget gamenya, ketimbang sebuah novel yang dapat berdiri sendiri.
