"We" bercerita tentang sebuah dunia "sempurna". Sebuah dunia tempat segala sesuatunya diatur secara presisi. Dunia tempat alam liar telah ditaklukkan. Tempat setiap orang adalah roda gigi bagi One State. Di dunia inilah D-503 tinggal.

Yevgeny Zamyatin membuat sebuah negara, One State, yang dikelilingi oleh sebuah dinding raksasa. Dinding itu menjadi batas antara alam liar yang irasional, dengan dunia mesin yang sempurna.

Man ceased to be a wild man only when we built the Green Wall, only when, by means of that Wall, we isolated our perfect machine world from the irrational, ugly world of trees, birds, and animals.

Diceritakan dalam gaya jurnal D-503, "We" mengambil sudut pandang D-503 yang bahagia dan bangga akan dunianya. Hingga dia bertemu seorang gadis, I-330, yang membuat dunianya jungkir balik. Bukan saja I-330 mengacaukan rutinitas yang menjadi kewajibannya, I-330 juga menarik D-503 ke dalam sebuah revolusi. Sebuah pemberontakan terhadap One State.

Cara berceritanya enak diikuti. Tidak terasa seperti novel klasik yang kadang agak membosankan buat saya ^^. Dunia yang Zamyatin bangun terasa jelas. Banyak aspek yang bisa menjadi contoh dan pemikiran bagi penulis yang ingin membangun sebuah distopia.

Akhir ceritanya, yah, sangat berbeda dengan novel distopia saat ini.
