"Stuff Matters" adalah sebuah buku sains populer yang membahas tentang berbagai material di sekitar kita. Mark Miodownik membawa pembacanya mengarungi sebuah dunia yang kadang terlewatkan begitu saja dalam hidup kita.

Kalau kita melihat ke sekeliling, pasti kita bisa menemukan begitu banyak material di sekitar kita. Misalkan kertas dari buku yang sedang kamu baca, kaca yang kita pakai untuk mematut diri, atau bahkan tempat kita tinggal. Semuanya adalah material yang sering luput dari pengamatan karena begitu lazimnya keberadaan mereka.


Gaya menulis Miodownik sangat mengalir. Dia bisa menjelaskan topik-topik yang ada dengan aneka fakta menarik serta anekdot. Tipe guru yang kalau menerangkan, pasti akan diperhatikan oleh siswanya.

Bagian paling menarik buat saya adalah pembahasan tentang cokelat dan aerogel. Tidak menyangka kalau ada begitu banyak tipe biji cokelat, serta bagaimana cokelat pertama kali dibuat. Untuk aerogel, bahan ini tampak seperti bahan yang keluar dari dalam novel fiksi ilmiah. Material yang terdiri dari 99,8% udara-sangat ringan- tapi begitu kuat dan tahan panas.

Secara keseluruhan, "Stuff Matters" adalah buku pengetahuan yang tidak membosankan. Bahkan kalau pembacanya tidak punya pengetahuan atau ketertarikan terhadap dunia material, seperti saya, buku ini tetap bisa menjaga agar kita membacanya sampai akhir.
