"BioShock: Rapture" adalah novelisasi dari game yang berjudul sama. Walau merupakan novelisasi, tapi buku ini tidak menceritakan kejadian di dalam game. Justru novel ini menjadi prekuel dari apa yang terjadi di dalam game.

Untuk gamenya, BioShock mengambil sudut pandang seorang pria yang selamat dari kecelakaan pesawat dan secara tidak sengaja menemukan mercusuar yang menjadi pintu masuk Rapture. Sementara di buku ini, diceritakan kisah awal pembangunan Rapture, hingga hari kejatuhannya (sebelum peristiwa di game berlangsung).

Rapture adalah kota di bawah air yang dibangun karena idealisme Andrew Ryan. Andrew Ryan ingin menciptakan sebuah utopia tanpa batasan. Dalam kata-katanya sendiri:

A city where the artist would not fear the censor.
Where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality.
Where the great would not be constrained by the small.
And with the sweat of your brow,
Rapture can become your city as well.

Tapi, seperti yang bisa ditebak, tanpa batasan justru menjadi kejatuhan kota itu sendiri. Khususnya setelah ditemukannya ADAM, sejenis zat yang bisa mengubah gen manusia, memberikan kekuatan pada manusia, seperti: mengendalikan api, menimbulkan listrik, teleportasi, atau telekinesis.

Buatku, novel ini merupakan salah satu novelisasi terbaik. Bukan hanya memberikan servis tambahan bagi penggemar gamenya, tapi juga bisa menjadi awal untuk menarik orang baru ke dalam serial ini. Bukunya bisa dibaca bahkan kalau belum pernah memainkan gamenya sekali pun.

I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

No, says the man in Washington; it belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican; it belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow; it belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose...
Rapture.
